Fashion e-commerce in Mexico - statistics & facts
As in most parts of the world, e-commerce served as a crucial lifeline for the fashion industry in Mexico during the COVID-19 restrictions. While online shopping for apparel, shoes, and accessories was already on the rise before 2020, the pandemic gave it an unprecedented boost. In addition to providing a platform for Mexican fashion to gain exposure locally and abroad, e-commerce has made global trends more accessible to Mexicans. As a result, forecasts indicate a nearly 50 percent surge in revenues from fashion e-commerce between 2022 and 2027, reaching more than 10.5 billion U.S. dollars.
Male shoppers spend more, Gen Z goes mobile
To fully understand the growing relevance of fashion in Mexico's e-commerce landscape, it is necessary to first grasp the demographics behind its success. In this regard, a 2022 survey on the average expenditure per online fashion purchase in the Latin American country unveiled that male-identified internet shoppers allocated a more substantial budget for their digital fashion purchases than their female counterparts. On the other hand, when comparing the annual frequency of fashion shopping across age groups in Mexico, the results were somewhat uniform. Still, mobile fashion shopping remains young people's territory, as nearly nine out of ten mobile fashion shoppers aged 18 to 24 years old.Brands up their game in Mexico
A myriad of domestic and international brands are engaged in the online sale of fashion items in Mexico. In 2022, the local department store Liverpool ranked as the country's favorite online fashion retailer. However, Chinese fast fashion giant SHEIN remains resolute in claiming this position, as evidenced by its substantial investments in advertising within the Mexican market. Considering the benefits of taking over Latin America's second-largest e-commerce market, this strategic approach inherently holds considerable advantages. This calculated gamble has yielded rapid results. Since July 2021, SHEIN has taken the lead as the most-used websites for fashion purchases and stands as Mexico's most downloaded fashion shopping app.
