is the third-largest in Europe, making up for a significant share of retail trade in the country. The
has lurched around 30 percent in recent years. Even though offline food sales account for the largest

Sales channels and major retailers
Traditional trade is the most popular sales channel for food shopping in Russia, followed by discounters. Recently, however,
online food retail has experienced notable growth - partly promoted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020. Moscow inhabitants and those residing in its region were the
most active e-grocery shoppers, with over 180 thousand daily orders in 2020.
X5 Retail Group is the
largest food retailer countrywide, in offline and online segments. Perekrestok – the supermarket chain brand of X5 Retail Group – was the retailer with the
second-largest product range online in 2020. Samokat, the express food delivery service operating in the largest cities, recorded the
highest number of orders in July 2021.
Customer preferences
According to a survey conducted in 2021, Russians shopped for food products at least sixfold more often in
offline shops than in e-groceries.
Average receipt value was also reported comparatively greater in traditional grocery stores than online. Therefore, supermarkets and hypermarkets were
customers' preferred retail formats for everyday food shopping. Meat and dairy products were the two
most consumed food categories and the ones with the highest per capita expenditure in the country as of 2020.
