Food delivery services in Germany - statistics & facts
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had a significant impact on food delivery services in Germany. Germany’s several lockdowns since the pandemic was declared in March 2020 also included restaurant closures. Consequently, in order to survive, many establishments were forced to turn to either taking to-go orders right on site or deliveries, which were both allowed. Delivery services, whether working with a restaurant or available in-house, had to be evaluated in correspondence with social distancing and hygiene rules to make deliveries possible. In 2020, Germans spent almost 4 billion euros on delivery services.
Faced with working from home, dealing with challenging daily schedules, German consumers, nevertheless, still did not overindulge in ordering food to be delivered. Just 1.6 percent of millennials stated during a survey conducted in 2020 that they ordered food, mainly pizza, several times a week. Among the general population, 33 million people never used food delivery services and 21 million rarely did. Food deliveries also include grocery deliveries, such as offered by the supermarket chain Rewe.
Food delivery services have been popular with consumers for a long time. Booking orders and deliveries online has made the process even quicker. Whether the delivery of a meal occurs through a restaurant’s takeout service, a food delivery app or a meal prep company, consumers have a variety of options to choose from, with mobile technology increasing convenience and access speed for the service of choice, provided the technology corresponds on both sides. In most cases it is also still possible to place an order by phone. As of 2020, 26,000 restaurants in Germany were connected to the online food delivery website Lieferando.de, which is owned by Just Eat Takeaway.
