DuPont is a diversified company that develops and manufactures products for various sectors, including automotive, construction, energy, military and law enforcement, and packaging. Kevlar, a lightweight and durable organic fiber aramid used in military equipment, is one of DuPont's most well-known products. Other notable products include Lycra, Tyvek housewrap, neoprene synthetic rubber, nylon, and Teflon non-stick coating.Dupont's manufacturing history also includes several controversial products, including lead-based paints, which were later found to be toxic and detrimental to human health; chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), that were widely used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and aerosol products and were subsequently shown to cause stratospheric ozone depletion; and harmful chemicals like the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) found in Teflon.
The DuPont chemical company remains a globally significant manufacturer of many products that play a significant role in modern society. Whilst some of their more controversial products have now been discontinued as a part of the DuPont product line, their manufacture and long-term environmental persistence and bioaccumulation has raised significant concerns about the impact of the DuPont chemical company on society and the environment.
