What is CRISPR, and how does it work?

CRISPR, short for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, functions like precise genetic scissors. In the 1980s, Japanese molecular biologists discovered these repeating sequences in bacterial DNA, which were later found to be part of a natural defense mechanism against viruses. Bacteria use CRISPR to store fragments of viral DNA and deploy them to create the Cas9 enzyme, which cuts viral DNA during future attacks. In 2012, scientists adapted this system for gene editing in other organisms, including plants, animals, and humans. The CRISPR-Cas9 complex can be programmed to target and modify specific genetic sequences, allowing precise alterations such as deleting, adding, or replacing DNA segments. The technology also shows promise in fighting infectious diseases indirectly, such as by modifying mosquito genes to control populations and reduce malaria transmission. Looking ahead, CRISPR could revolutionize medicine, agriculture, and environmental management. It enables the creation of crops with enhanced nutritional profiles, increased yields, or reduced allergens. The 2018 case of a Chinese scientist using CRISPR to create babies without receptors for the HI virus that causes AIDS sparked widespread controversy and highlighted the need for ethical guidelines. Similarly, public opinion on genetically modified organisms (GMOs) may influence the acceptance of CRISPR-edited foods, despite the technology's precision compared to older methods.
