Bottled water market in the UK - statistics & facts

Water is the most consumed beverage on Earth and packaged water is taking an increasingly large share of that consumption. Bottled water is also the largest component of the non-alcoholic beverages market worldwide, accounting for almost 50 percent of sales. Most water is packaged in plastic bottles although glass and even cans make up a small portion of the market.

UK market landscape

The UK market for bottled water was worth 1.6 billion British pounds in 2021, a slight increase compared to the previous year. Sales of unsweetened mineral and aerated waters manufactured within the UK also saw a slight increase in sales in 2021 to 372 million GBP. Still water accounts for the largest share of packaged water sales, 77.6 percent of the market in 2021. Mineral water was likewise the most dominant variety of water, accounting for almost two thirds of sales.

Consumption

Overall, UK consumers drink 2.5 million liters of bottled water a year. Per person consumption stood at 49.7 liters in 2021. This figure is expected to grow to 57 liters by 2027. Among consumers of bottled water, nearly two-thirds drank the beverage at least once a week. The brand of bottled mineral water most preferred in Great Britain is Highland Spring Water. Over six million British consumers drink the brand. Combined, private label brands of mineral water reached even more consumers and Tesco's own brand reached 3.3 million Brits alone.
