Music market in Denmark - statistics & facts
The state of music listening and streaming in Denmark
Danes do love music – roughly 95 percent of them have listened to it in the past three months. Since most music consumption happens at home or on the go, it comes as no surprise that radio and streaming services are the most popular access methods for music fans in Denmark. Interestingly, when it comes to the leading services used for music streaming, YouTube has a higher usage rate in the country than Spotify. It does, however, trump social media and YouSee Musik, Nordics’ competitor to mainstream music apps. All in all, the majority of Danes can be found on a subscription-based music platform, with only a fraction downloading digital formats.Danish live music market
Digital music takes center stage in Denmark, yet live music is winning over more and more Danish media consumers. Visiting concerts, music festivals, or other live events is becoming increasingly popular. At least one in five Danes choose to listen to music this way. And there are plenty of options to consider – in 2022 alone, there were more than 33.9 thousand live music events held in Denmark. The biggest such event in the country is the Roskilde Festival, attracting roughly 130,000 attendees every year from Denmark and from all over Europe. Over the course of four days approximately 150 bands play less conventional Scandinavian and international music5. The popularity of this festival is in line with the higher appreciation for the non-classical genre among concert-goers.In the country that gave the world musicians such as Aqua, Safri Duo, and MØ, music seems to accompany Danes throughout the day, with more than 70 percent of them listening at least once, if not several times daily. Combined with the popularity of streaming, this medium carries a lot of potential for businesses that wish to reach their consumers. The recorded music industry is growing strong in Denmark, and when not streaming music, consumers use live music events for entertainment and discovery.
