Hotels in Denmark - statistics & facts
A growing number of tourists visit the kingdom of Denmark, and the small country in Northern Europe attracts by far the most tourists among the Scandinavian countries. With 56.1 million overnight stays in 2019, more travelers than ever before stayed overnight in the country. Had it not been for the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), resulting in a national lockdown and closed borders, prospects for the tourism industry were looking better than ever. In the wake of the coronavirus crisis, the accommodation industry faced several problems as the tourist boom came to an immediate end. As Denmark gradually reopened, however, domestic and international tourists alike started vacationing in the country once again, albeit not to the same extent as before.
Most tourists visiting Denmark rent holiday houses near the coast or close to other nature surroundings. After holiday houses, hotels are the most popular accommodation type among visitors. To give more details, 30 percent of all visitors spent the night in one of the 652 hotels in Denmark in 2019. During that same year, the number of overnight stays in hotels exceeded 21 million, with July and August being especially busy months.
The leading hotel company in Denmark is Scandic. In comparison to other major hotel chains such as Nordic Choice Hotels and Radisson, Scandic both have the largest number of hotel rooms, and the highest net sales. In fact, Scandic is the largest hotel operator in the Nordics, with about 280 hotels in six different countries including Sweden, Norway and Finland.
Compared to other types of accommodation, hotels account for the highest revenues in Denmark. In 2019, hotels reached a revenue of nearly 16 billion Danish kroner, most of which was generated in the Capital Region of Denmark. While the revenue per available room of hotels in Copenhagen amounted to 63 euros in the beginning of 2020, it dropped significantly in the following months, and was down to 13 euros as of June 2020. Whether the hotel industry will continue growing in 2020, only time will tell.
