In the most general sense, visitor attractions refer to recreational facilities open to the public. There are many different types of visitor attractions in the Netherlands, including those with a historical, cultural, entertainment, and/or nature-based focus.
With examples including De Efteling theme park or the Keukenhof - famous for its tulip gardens - the
most popular attractions in the Netherlands attract large numbers of national and international visitors every year. However, many Dutch leisure and cultural venues were significantly disrupted by the
coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, suffering a sharp drop in attendance. While De Efteling remained the most visited attraction in the Netherlands in both 2019 and 2020, its number of visitors dropped from 5.2 million to roughly three million over that period. Meanwhile, the Keukenhof, which attracted over 1.5 million guests in 2019, was closed to the public in 2020.
Museums in the Netherlands
There are several hundred museums in the Netherlands. Furthermore, according to the Dutch Museum Association, the
most common types of collections in museums in the Netherlands were history and art. The association had affiliations with 280 history museums and more than 100 art museums in 2020. Some of the
most popular museums in the Netherlands are the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, both located in Amsterdam in the famous Museum quarter. The first one is a museum dedicated to the arts and history of Amsterdam, and the collection contains more than 2,000 paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, including the famous Night Watch by Rembrandt. The
Rijksmuseum attracted approximately 670 thousand visitors in 2020. Meanwhile, the
Van Gogh Museum registered roughly 500 thousand visitors that year. The museum owns the largest collection of Van Gogh’s paintings in the world.
Zoos in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is also home to many zoos. The most popular zoos are in Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Diergaarde Blijdorp Rotterdam, one of the oldest Dutch zoos located north of the harbor city, is home to various animals and plants over a 25-hectare area. In 2020, the
number of attendees at Diergaarde Blijdorp Rotterdam amounted to approximately 823 thousand. The
Natura Artis Magistra zoo in Amsterdam, another popular animal park in the Netherlands, attracted 700 thousand visitors in 2020. The Artis is the oldest Dutch zoo, houses about 700 species, and boasts an impressive aquarium.
