Cosmetics and personal care industry in Sweden - Statistics & Facts
Especially organic products seemed to be very popular among consumers in the Scandinavian country. In fact, the revenue of companies in the organic skin and beauty care industry in Sweden amounted to 190 million Swedish kronor in 2017. According to a survey, in the following years, the revenue is expected to increase strongly to 900 million Swedish kronor in 2025.
Based on the revenues and number of outlets, Sweden’s leading personal care retailer in 2020 was Apoteket AB. In both cases, Kronansapotek with its chain Kronans Apotek followed. Among the brands sold in these and other stores, ACO sales amounted to approximately 286 million Swedish kronor in 2020 and thereby led the ranking of cosmetic and hygiene brands in the country. ACO Hud AB manufactures skin care and pharmaceutical products. The French personal care company L’Oréal ranked second, closely followed by the cosmetic brand Clinique.
Overall, the consumption value of cosmetics and personal care products grew in Sweden. Expenditure increased from about 1.73 billion euros in 2013 to approximately 1.98 billion euros in 2019. The consumer price index (CPI) measures changes in the average cost of most consumer goods and services. It reports inflation and deflation (rising and falling prices). For cosmetics, it fluctuated slightly in the past months and was measured at 197.13 in March 2021, with the year 1980 equaling 100.
