Mobile payments in the Nordics - statistics & facts
The most common payment app in Denmark is MobilePay which was launched in 2013 by Danske Bank. Today, the app is used by more than 80 percent of Danes, which is not comparable to any other payment app in the country. Nearly all Danes in the age group from 20 to 29 years used the app as of January 2020, and it was only in the age group of 70 years and older that less than half of the population used the app.
A few months after MobilePay was launched in Denmark, it was launched in Finland where it is also the most common payment app, though the user share there was much lower than in Denmark, with 20 percent of Finns as of 2019. The app had more than 30 thousand daily active users as of January 2020.
In Sweden the most common payment app is Swish. The app was launched by several large Swedish banks in 2012, and as of February 2019 the app had more than seven million customers, most of them private customers.
The most common mobile payment app used in Norway is called Vipps. It was launched by the Norwegian bank DNB in 2015 and was used by almost 80 percent of Norwegians in 2019. The app had more than 100,000 daily active users as of January 2020.
