Motor insurance market in Italy - statistics & facts
With over 40 million vehicles registered in Italy and mandatory motor liability insurance, it should come as no surprise that motor insurance is one of the largest segments in the insurance sector. Indeed, motor insurance gross written premiums reached 15 billion euros in 2021 and accounted for nearly half of the total gross written premiums in the non-life insurance sector. There are two main motor insurance types in Italy: motor hull insurance and motor liability insurance. The latter is mandatory to have in order to drive legally in the country. Thus, it comes as no surprise that motor liability insurance premiums account for the majority of gross written premiums of the Italian market leaders.
How do consumers purchase motor insurance in Italy?
Most Italian consumers had car insurance in 2023, which makes sense given that there are roughly two registered vehicles to three people in Italy and motor liability insurance is mandatory to drive on Italian roads. Almost 60 million people live in Italy and approximately 40 million passenger cars are registered, which is not even taking other vehicles, such as mopeds into account. Car insurance was also the insurance most likely to be purchased online according to a June 2023 survey.How have motor claims developed in recent years?
Motor insurance grants coverage in case of accidents, injuries, theft, or damage, depending on the type of policy chosen. When an accident occurs, policyholders present a claim to their insurance provider in order to receive compensation for the damage. Motor insurance claims submitted in Italy increased in most Italian regions in 2022. Lombardy was the region with the highest number of claims, even ahead of the region containing the capital city of Rome, Lazio. Although Rome is the capital city, the GDP of the largest city in Lombardy, Rome, is significantly higher.
