Music industry in Italy - statistics & facts
According to data compiled by the Italian Society of Authors and Publishers, the segment of the live music sector was undoubtedly a pivotal source of income for the music industry of this country. Indeed, the box office revenues of the concert industry in Italy amounted to more than 423 million euros in 2018. In this sense, it is reasonable to think that the region of Lombardy played a decisive role. As of 2019, this region in the North-West of Italy registered the highest concert turnover, the highest number of music festivals as well as the greatest number of music events and concert organization agencies.
Despite a newfound fascination for vinyl records, another fundamental resource for the Italian music industry related to music streaming platforms in 2018. In fact, their market value roughly quintuplicated from 2013 to 2018. As of 2015 and 2016, Spotify was the main streaming platform used to listen to music in Italy, mostly accessed via smartphone and computer. Furthermore, by looking at the ten leading songs of the Spotify Weekly Chart - Italy from 2013 to 2019, it can be noticed that hip hop and trap were among the most popular music genres. In 2019, hip hop and trap music were particularly popular among listeners aged between 16 and 24 years old.
