Children's toy and games market in Russia - statistics & facts

The gradual recovery of fertility rates since 2000 in Russia has had a positive impact on the children’s toys and games industry. In 2022, its revenue was estimated at around 4.9 billion U.S. dollars, making Russia one of the leading markets worldwide. The retail trade share of children's games and toys in the country saw an increase between 2017 and 2020, but it declined slightly to 1.4 percent in 2021.

Toys and games retail in Russia

Sales of games and toys for children in Russia exceeded 226 billion Russian rubles in specialized stores alone in 2021, having increased by 20 percent from the previous year. Residents of Moscow demonstrated the highest per capita spending on children's toys, at over 3.3 thousand Russian rubles. Among various products, construction sets accounted for the largest sales value, which can be explained by the elevated retail prices of such items relative to other entertainment articles. Dolls and wheeled toys together generated nearly a third of the sales value.



Foreign trade in toys and games in Russia

The export trade in the Russian children’s toy market has witnessed a significant and accelerated growth since 2016. The import-to-export gap, however, remains significant to this date. In 2021, imports of children’s toys, games, and sports requisites to the country were about 2.1 billion U.S. dollars greater than the value of such commodities exported from the country. Imported products occupied over 90 percent of all children's toys sold in Russia in 2021, thus making this product category one of the most dependent on imports. In 2022, the Danish toy manufacturer Lego exited the Russian market in response to the war in Ukraine. Other Western companies that suspended operations in Russia include Hasbro and Mattel.
