Electric cars in Italy - Statistics & Facts

According to a recent survey, 57 percent of Italian car drivers think that economic relevance is the main reason for choosing an electric car.
The market of electric cars in Italy is growing, showing that electric mobility is becoming more than a trending topic. Based on the number of electric cars registered in Italy, a strong growth rate can be seen in the last two years, increasing from 1,452 units in 2015 to 2,220 units sold in 2017.
This trend is also confirmed within segments, in particular for cars belonging to segment B (small cars with a length of approximately 4 metres), from 229 units sold in 2016 to 374 units in 2017, and vehicles in segment C (medium cars having a length of approximately 4.5 metres), increasing from 681 units as of 2016 to 706 units sold in 2017.
In spite of their positive contribution to the environment, electric cars do not offer the same distribution network as traditional vehicles. In fact, car drivers do seem concerned when it comes to the disadvantages of electric cars. 55 percent of respondents to a survey reported that fear of running out of charge was greatest, while 11 percent stated that electric cars do not have disadvantages.
Regarding charging points, 36 percent of male car drivers would find it useful to be able to recharge electric vehicles at supermarkets, while 56 percent of Italians living in the northwest of Italy would prefer gas stations. As of 2018, 50 percent of charging points were located in urban areas, and 5 percent in extra-urban areas.
Despite the disadvantages listed by car drivers, they are still interested in electric cars. According to a recent survey, 56 percent of car drivers stated that car incentives should be one of the measures adopted for electric cars promotion, such as favorable taxes on energy.
