Thanks to its flavorful taste, its nutritional properties, and its creamy texture, avocado has become a popular ingredient in the diets and eating habits of people around the world. Today, it still grows best in tropical humid places, relying on additional geographic features, depending on its variety, of which hass is by far the most popular.
Which countries in the region produce avocado and how much?
Latin America and the Caribbean is the
main avocado producing region in the world thanks to its climate conditions, and the
leading regional producers include Mexico, Colombia, Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Brazil. However, it is Mexico that stands out when it comes to volume. In 2022,
it produced over 2.5 million metric tons of avocado, which represented about 30 percent of the
total global production volume.
Due to the growing international demand, production has consistently increased in every producing country. For instance, in just ten years,
Peru increased its avocado production by 270 percent, while the
Dominican Republic’s production grew by 154 percent.
Avocado exports
Avocados are an important agricultural export commodity for Latin America and the Caribbean. Mexico, Peru, Chile, and Colombia are among the top
exporters both globally and
on a regional level, with Mexico being the leading exporting country in both cases. In 2022,
the region exported around 4.9 billion U.S. dollars' worth of avocados. Some of the
main destinations included the United States and Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom, and Japan and China, a testament to the global popularity of the fruit.
A growing sector
The effect avocado has had on the agricultural sector is palpable and more countries are seeking to expand their presence in the U.S. and European markets. For this reason, the area for cultivation is increasing at a fast pace. In
Brazil, for example, the avocado harvest area more than doubled between 2014 and 2022. Another prominent example is Colombia, where
production stagnated between 2019 and 2020 due to the La Niña climate phenomenon. Despite this setback and despite having generally a lower
yield than other countries, the
avocado harvest area increased by over 80 thousand hectares in the past decade, turning it into a global competitor.
