Automobile industry in Germany - statistics & facts
German cars are famous. Several brands have been around for a very long time and are known the world over. The automobile industry in Germany generated over 506 billion euros in total sales in 2022, compared to around 411 billion euros the year before. Considering that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began in March 2020, these figures are an indication of the effect of closures and restrictions, both on the production side and consumers. Most recently, gross production value in German car manufacturing was roughly 457.5 billion euros, a decrease compared to the year before.

The total weight of cars exported from Germany in 2022 was around 148 billion tons, while export value amounted to roughly 245.3 billion euros that same year. German vehicles were mainly exported to European countries. Other leading regions for vehicle export included North and South America, as well as Asia. The list of leading import countries for German motor vehicles included the U.S., the UK and China among the top three. As of 2022, around 34.83 billion euros worth of German cars were exported to the United States.
