Wine market in Canada - statistics & facts
Wine across the nation
Not only do Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia account for the largest share of sales value but they also comprise the bulk of wine producers in Canada. Collectively, the provinces are home to over 90 percent of wineries in the nation. The trend follows in per capita spending as well, with Quebec leading by a significant margin at 377 Canadian dollars. What kind of wine are the Québécois spending their money on? French wine, naturally, which accounts for a third of sales in the province.Wine trade
As consumption has declined, so too have imports. From a high of 443 million liters in 2021, import fell by eight percent to 407 million liters in 2023. Australia and Italy were nearly equal, as the top origin countries for wine import volume while France was theleading import partner in value in 2023. In contrast to declining imports, wine exports from Canada have been soaring, growing by 23 percent from 2021 to 2023, although total volume is still far below what the country imports. Nearly all wine exported from Canada is bound for the United States.Although many Canadians still love wine, the industry is stagnating and its ability to rebound in the face of declining interest in alcohol is uncertain.
