In January 2022, Veolia Environnement S.A. completed the acquisition of its main competitor Suez, in a deal worth more than 23 billion U.S. dollars. This consolidated the French multinational as the unchallenged largest waste management company worldwide, based on revenue. Headquartered just outside of Paris, Veolia operates in numerous countries, and provides services across three main business activities: water, waste management, and energy services.
Veolia’s financial results
Veolia’s revenue reached 45.4 billion euros in 2023, the highest figure recorded in the past decade. Following the acquisition of Suez, the company's revenue saw a year-over-year growth of more than 50 percent in 2022. Regionally, Veolia’s operations in Europe (including France) accounted for roughly two-thirds of the company’s revenue. Veolia’s net income was also positively affected by the acquisition, surpassing 1.3 billion euros in 2023. Likewise, Veolia’s EBITDA reached 6.5 billion euros that same year.Veolia business divisions
Of Veolia’s main business activities, its water division brought in the largest share of revenue in 2023, at 18.1 billion euros (or 41 percent of the company’s revenue). The Veolia Group provides drinking water to more than 110 million people, and wastewater services to roughly 97 million people. Meanwhile, the company’s waste services generated revenue of 14.7 billion euros, of which 28 percent was generated from hazardous waste activities. Veolia operates over 800 waste processing facilities worldwide and provides approximately 46 million people with collection services.
