Whether you are looking for a TV, using a video game console, listening to a song, or watching a movie, the company name Sony will most likely come up. Headquartered in the Minato district of Tokyo, Sony is a well-established multinational corporation. The company generated almost 87 billion U.S. dollars in total annual revenue in 2023. Around one third of Sony’s income comes from its game and network segment, which includes the company’s prominent line of gaming consoles. Other products and services include TVs, cameras, semiconductors, as well as music and motion pictures. While the company’s revenue has remained relatively stable over the years, the number of employees has decreased considerably over the last ten years from more than 160,000 to around 113,000.
A consumer electronics giant
As a global leader in consumer electronics, Sony is well known for manufacturing various products, including televisions, digital cameras, smartphones, and hearables. However, the company is most associated with the widely popular line of home video game consoles under the gaming brand PlayStation. In 2020, Sony first announced its intention to engage in the electric vehicle (EV) market with a fully electric concept car- Vision S-01. Featuring the Sony Vision-S platform, this 4-seat sedan vehicle outfits 33 sensors – to achieve self-driving and safety measures – as well as a Sony panoramic screen and speakers. In 2022, Sony’s CEO Kenchiro Yoshida announced the commercial launch of Sony’s second EV, the Vision-02, a 7-seat SUV that features 40 sensors, home entertainment technologies, and 5G connectivity. This announcement coincided with the creation of Sony Mobility Inc., a new company that will focus on electric cars – a trend seen in other non-traditional car makers but established tech companies, such as Amazon and Alibaba. In the future, Sony will continue expanding their horizons and entering new markets to stay at the top of the competitive tech industry.
