Sprint Corporation, an American telecommunications company, merged with T-Mobile US in April 2020. It was one of the largest wireless service providers in the United States, operating nationwide alongside AT&T and Verizon Wireless.
Sprint through history
Sprint's roots trace back to the Brown Telephone Company, founded in 1899. Its modern name emerged from the 1982 merger of South Pacific Communications and General Telephone & Electric Corporation, forming GTE Sprint under United Telecommunications. In 2005, Sprint Corporation merged with Nextel Communications, becoming Sprint Nextel Corporation.
In 2013, SoftBank Corporation, a Japanese multinational telecommunications company, acquired Sprint Nextel Corporation, leading to the closure of Nextel operations and the return of the Sprint Corporation name. The merger with T-Mobile was finalized in April 2020.
Sprint: One of the former ‘Big Four’
In 2019, Sprint served nearly 55 million subscribers across postpaid, prepaid, wholesale, and affiliate platforms, with over 33.84 million postpaid retail customers. That year, Sprint's prepaid business generated $3.75 billion in revenue.
As part of the T-Mobile merger, DISH Network Corporation acquired Sprint's prepaid business, Boost Mobile, for $1.4 billion. This deal included approximately 8.27 million subscribers as of the fourth quarter of 2019, instantly establishing DISH as the third-largest prepaid wireless operator in the United States.
