Golden Globes - statistics & facts
First held in 1944, the Golden Globe Awards entered the 2020s in decline. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), whose mission is to vote every year for the very best in film and television in the United States and abroad, faced strong criticism over suspicions of toxic working environments and a lack of diversity among its members. In 2021, after the Globes recorded the lowest number of TV viewers in the 21st century, the HFPA discontinued the ceremony, and the following year announced the winners via social media. After a major restructuring in 2022, NBC agreed to broadcast the 2023 edition of the ceremony.
A slight rebound
2024 marked a slight rebound for the Golden Globes in terms of with a total of 9.4 million viewers, up from the last televised edition. The show also rated better than the previous year. However, the Golden Globes are not the only Hollywood award ceremony suffering from declining TV viewership. Audience figures for the Academy Awards and the Emmy Awards ceremonies have been constantly shrinking and reaching new lows over the past years. On a more positive note however, although the 2022 Oscars was the second-least-watched edition yet, not all hope is lost as it recorded a viewership increase of over 50 percent in comparison to the previous year.And the winners are...
Only time will tell if the HFPA can recover the prestige it once enjoyed. The 2024 edition of the Golden Globes was in line with industry trends, concentrating most of the motion picture nominations on Netflix and Warner Bros. productions. Universal was the movie distributor with the highest number of awards won, five in total, all of them for "Oppenheimer". Christopher Nolan's latest movie was crowned Best Drama and its lead Cillian Murphy Best Drama Actor. The TV shows “Succession” and “The Bear” received many accolades in their categories. However, despite HFPA’s push towards diversity, only two Best Director nominees were women.
