Porsche belongs among the most famous luxury and sports car brands in the world, known for the high performance and reliability of their cars. In 2009, Porsche merged with Volkswagen, creating an integrated working group. The Porsche brand is thus currently a part of the Volkswagen Group’s portfolio, together with the vehicle brands Audi, Volkswagen, Seat, Škoda Auto, MAN, and others. In 2023, the Volkswagen Group generated a total revenue of over 322 billion euros, with Porsche contributing some 37 billion euros, trailing only the Volkswagen and Audi car brands and proving its significance to the group.
Porsche’s revenue increased by over 43 percent between 2020 and 2023, reflecting a larger trend of growth in the luxury car market. In 2023, the global luxury car market was sized at some 635 billion euros, an increase of over 26 percent compared to 503 billion euros in 2020.
Rising demand for Porsche
Deliveries of Porsche cars have been growing in the last decade, with the exception of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. In 2023, Porsche deliveries peaked at more than 320,000 vehicles. The majority of these vehicles—some 86,000—found new owners in North America, followed by China with over 79,000 deliveries that year. The most popular models among customers were the Cayenne and Macan in 2023, with sales of over 87,000 each. Both models are luxury SUVs more suitable for daily use, as compared to other Porsche models. Among the sports models, Porsche 911 ranked as the most sought-after model that year with some 50,00 deliveries.History of Porsche
Founded in 1931 in Stuttgart, Germany by Ferdinand Porsche, a high-end and race car designer, the company was initially contracted by the state to develop a car for the masses. This car later became the Volkswagen Beetle and led to the creation of the Volkswagen brand. During the second world war, Porsche’s efforts were focused on the development of tanks and weaponry for the German army. With the fall of the Nazi Germany, Porsche’s car manufacturing activities resumed and in the following decades, the company went on to produce various sport cars models, gaining its popularity among car enthusiasts. In 2002, Porsche introduced its first SUV model—the Cayenne—followed by a compact crossover SUV—the Macan—in 2014. Porsche has also been producing a battery electric car—the Taycan—since 2019. In 2024, Porsche was perceived as the second most sustainable German brand in the world.
