Uruguay: general election 2024 - Statistics & facts
Elections in Uruguay are held every five years and voting is compulsory. The presidential election uses a two-round system, which stipulates that, if a candidate does not receive 50 percent plus one of the votes, a second round would be held. This election marks the end of the term of current President Lacalle Pou, whose approval rating as of September 2024 was 45 percent.
The aftermath: a new president was elected
In accordance with the Uruguayan constitution, the incumbent president is not eligible for re-election. Consequently, President Lacalle Pou was not a candidate in the current electoral cycle. In his place, the internal party election selected Álvaro Delgado as the candidate for the Partido Nacional (National Party). The polls heading to the first round proved to be accurate, and both Delgado's party and the left-wing party Frente Amplio (Broad Front) failed to secure the required threshold of more than 50 percent of the vote. Thus, the second round of voting between the two candidates took place on November 24, 2024. Yamandú Orsi of the Frente Amplio party was declared the winner, having received approximately 50 percent of the votes, while Álvaro Delgado obtained nearly 46 percent. As a result, former history teacher Yamandú Orsi will assume the role of President of Uruguay on March 1, 2025.
