They say home is where the heart is, but it seems increasingly that home is also where the gym is. According to a September 2023 survey in the United States, over half of respondents stated that their favorite place to work out was at home. With time constraints and a lack of motivation listed as some of the most common barriers to taking part in fitness activities, home fitness can provide a convenient and quick way to stay active from the comfort of one’s own home.
Why do people exercise from home?
Going to the gym can be a daunting task for fitness beginners as a result of the wide array of machines and adrenaline-fueled fitness classes. Indeed, in a June 2023 survey, privacy was listed among one of the most common reasons for exercising at home rather than in a gym. Moreover, more than half of respondents were sold by the convenience that a home workout provided. This convenience could indeed have a positive impact on the frequency with which consumers get active, with over half of respondents in the same survey stating that they exercised from home several times a week. Given that only around one-fifth of the American population engaged in some form of sports, exercise, or recreation daily in 2023, bringing fitness into the home might be a way to get people moving.How much is the fitness equipment industry worth?
Home gyms are one of the most common fitness investments in the United States, so it comes as no surprise that the exercise equipment market is worth billions. In fact, by 2029, the revenue of the exercise equipment market in the United States was expected to exceed seven billion U.S. dollars for the first time. Despite consumer purchases increasingly moving online, the leading channel used when buying fitness equipment in the United States remained in-store, allowing consumers to try before they buy. With connected companies such as Peloton appealing to those who want combine the comfort of working out at home with the motivation and engagement of taking part in group classes, it seems that the home fitness market shows no signs of slowing down.
