Fresenius is a Europe based healthcare company headquartered in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany. The company engages in hospital management and provides engineering and services for medical centers and other healthcare facilities. Founded in 1912, the company employed over 190 thousand people by 2023. The company is divided into four main segments, namely, Fresenius Medical Care, Fresenius Helios, Fresenius Kabi, Fresenius Vamed. In 2021, Fresenius Medical Care generated the highest net income, surpassing the combined earnings of the other divisions.

In 2023, Fresenius SE gained a revenue of 22.2 billion U.S. dollars worldwide, with around three-quarters of this generated in Europe. In the same year, the net income of the company surpassed 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, a slight decrease from the previous years. Earnings per share was reported at 2.67 euros in 2023, and is at its lowest mark since 2015. In terms of medical equipment sales, Johnson & Johnson was the largest company worldwide with annual sales of around 90 billion U.S. dollars. Following Novartis and Medtronic, Fresenius was ranked in fourth place. Johnson & Johnson, based in New Jersey, has a large focus on pharmaceuticals, but also on surgical products and orthopedic medical devices. In contrast to Fresenius, Johnson & Johnson had the majority of their sales in North America, with less than a quarter of the total sales recorded in Europe in 2023.
