Fresenius - statistics and facts
Fresenius, headquartered in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany, is presently one of the biggest medical technology companies in the world. The company is split into two main segments, namely Helios and Kabi. The former is a private healthcare provider and the largest hospital operator in Germany, and the latter focuses on products and services in medical technology and biopharmaceuticals, in particular with dialysis and renal products and disposables. Fresenius Helios generated a revenue of over 12 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, with Fresenius Kabi following with a revenue of eight billion U.S. dollars. Worldwide, there were almost 194 thousand employees of Fresenius, an increase of almost 30 thousand since 2019.

Fresenius reported a revenue of 22.2 billion U.S. dollars worldwide in 2023, this represents an increase of almost 25 percent since 2019. Around three-quarters of the revenue was generated in Europe, with a further 12 percent recorded in North America. Earnings per share were reported at 2.67 euros in 2023, conversely to increasing revenue, earnings per share were at their lowest level since 2015. Furthermore, Fresenius' market capitalization was worth over 15.8 billion euros worldwide in the same year, despite reaching more than 40 billion euros in 2016.Comparison with other medtech companies
In terms of medical equipment sales, Johnson & Johnson was the largest company worldwide with annual sales of around 90 billion U.S. dollars. Fresenius was ranked in fourth place, behind Novartis and Medtronic. Johnson & Johnson, based in New Jersey, has a large focus on pharmaceuticals, but also on surgical products and orthopedic medical devices. In contrast to Fresenius, Johnson & Johnson had the majority of their sales in North America, with less than a quarter of total sales recorded in Europe in 2023.
