Wolt – statistics & facts
Onwards and upwards with food delivery consolidation
The online food delivery industry has become notorious for mergers and acquisitions. From Uber’s acquisition of Postmates in the United States to Delivery Hero’s acquisition of Glovo, industry leaders are consolidating their market shares in the hope of achieving scale and long-awaited profitability. However, DoorDash’s acquisition of Wolt was by far the priciest one: in a deal worth eight billion U.S. dollars, it ranks second on the list of top e-commerce start-up acquisitions as of January 2024. The acquisition has effectively given DoorDash access to the international markets Wolt operates in. This international expansion was reflected in the financial results of the company: the marketplace GMV of DoorDash increased from 42 billion U.S. dollars in 2021 to nearly 67 billion U.S. dollars in 2023.Wolt users of the world unite!
As of March 2024, Wolt was the most popular food delivery brand in its native Finland. Beyond its home market, Wolt's mobile application was downloaded by millions of consumers around the globe. In November 2023, Wolt had more than 966,000 monthly app downloads worldwide. The food delivery company was a consumer favorite in many of the international markets it operates in, most notably Israel, Greece, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Japan. Together with Yandex Food, Glovo and others, Wolt was among the most popular players in the ready-made meal delivery market in Kazakhstan as of 2023.After joining forces with one of the biggest food delivery operators in the world, Wolt's brand equity soared and its market position got consolidated. Since the acquisition by DoorDash, Wolt expanded operations to two more countries: Austria and Iceland, a clear nod to the trajectory the new DoorDash-Wolt merger wants to take, building on Wolt's existing international expansion strategy, and a testament to its enduring success.
