Automobili Lamborghini is finally going electric. The Italian company and subsidiary of the Audi Progressive Brand Group started producing its first plug-in hybrid electric supercar, the Revuelto, in 2022. Deliveries of this model, however, were not yet underway. Lamborghini's first battery-electric vehicle model is slated to arrive in 2028 and will not be a supercar.
Electric vehicles have typically garnered success in the luxury car market, propelled by the financial performance recorded by Tesla since 2020. Luxury cars were a 635 billion euros global market in 2023, a figure which had been steadily growing since 2020. Supercars, a subset of sports cars which are themselves part of the luxury segment, have also been electrifying. Nevertheless, the overall demand for electric vehicles has been slowing down. Lamborghini’s CEO Stephan Winkelmann has gone on record in a 2024 interview, mentioning fully electric sports supercars were not selling so far, which is one of the reasons behind the brand’s cautious approach to electrification.
While Automobili Lamborghini recorded a good 2023 performance, it faces steep competition, including from some of the Volkswagen Group’s other subsidiaries. The size of the sports car sales revenue is projected to grow slowly to 76.9 billion in 2028, which puts the impetus on the brand to find ways to innovate.

Lamborghini trails behind Audi based on financial performance
Behind the Volkswagen Group’s eponymous passenger car brand, the Audi Progressive Brand Group was the second-best-performing segment of 2023 in terms of both revenue and vehicle sales. That year, Lamborghini reported around 2.7 billion euros in revenue, representing around 3.8 percent of the Progressive Brand Group’s 69.9 billion euros in net sales. This was the best fiscal year for the Italian brand since 2020, as it also recorded its highest operating profit across the past four years in 2023 and had a return on sales of 27.2 percent. The United States was estimated to be Lamborghini’s most prolific market, at approximately 260 million euros in revenue, followed by Germany and the United Kingdom. Around 64 percent of the brand’s vehicle deliveries were made in the U.S. and Europe, which contextualizes this financial performance. However, while this year was successful for Automobili Lamborghini on a brand level, its contribution to the Progressive Brand Group was still below that of Audi.Competition comes from other VW Group subsidiaries
In 2023, Audi was the third-best-selling luxury car brand worldwide, surpassing Tesla. Audi was among the Volkswagen Group’s subsidiaries, and is part of the same subsidiary of the German company as Lamborghini, making it one of its competitors. On the sports car market, Lamborghini is also projected to trail behind another one of the VW Group’s subsidiaries, Porsche. As of a December 2023 forecast by Statista’s Market Insights, Porsche was fifth in the global ranking based on its estimated 2023 sports car unit sales, while Lamborghini ranked twenty-fourth.While Automobili Lamborghini recorded a good 2023 performance, it faces steep competition, including from some of the Volkswagen Group’s other subsidiaries.
