Coffee market in Colombia – statistics & facts

Colombia is one of the largest and most popular coffee producers in the world. With its high quality arabica beans, and its mild and balanced flavors, Colombian coffee is a favorite among coffee drinkers. Domestically, it has a rich history and is an important part of the country’s culture. However, in recent years, the coffee sector has seen the impacts of climate change, as well as inflation.

Coffee production

Colombia is the second largest producer of coffee in Latin America and the Caribbean, after Brazil, with a production volume of over eleven million 60-kilogram bags and a gross production value of over 10 trillion Colombian pesos. Coffee is cultivated in several departments all over the country, such as Huila, Antioquia and Tolima. Antioquia belongs to one of the most significant regions for coffee production: the eje cafetero (coffee axis). The eje cafetero includes the departments of Risaralda, Quindio, and Caldas, as well as parts of Antioquia and Valle del Cauca, and it has been a World Heritage site since 2011.

Coffee trade

Coffee is a key export commodity in Colombia. In 2023, the South American country exported over 10.5 million 60-kilogram bags. The United States, Belgium, and Japan were some of the top countries of destination. However, given that Colombia exports over 93 percent of their produced coffee, it imports coffee from other countries to cover national demand. In 2022, it imported 142 thousand metric tons of coffee, most of it from Brazil, Peru and Honduras.

Consumption

Coffee is enjoyed almost daily and in a variety of ways, the most common being with a "tinto", which is a simple black coffee made with the pour-over method. Most consumers in Colombia prefer roasted ground coffee to soluble coffee, and the consumption volume surpassed two million 60-kg bags in 2023. In recent years, however, the coffee sector has been affected by climate issues, such as heavy rainfall, changes in temperature, among others, and the result has been a decrease in production and, also thanks to inflation, higher prices. Between 2019 and 2023, production decreased by about 25 percent, and in the first half of 2023, households in Colombia were paying 17 percent more than a year earlier.
