Television industry in Indonesia - statistics & facts

Even though on-demand services have developed rapidly recently, Indonesia’s traditional television industry remains stable. The traditional TV and home video market in Indonesia has continued to experience annual revenue increases in recent years, reaching a total revenue of around 2.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. The market is also expected to remain resilient and continue to experience positive annual growth in the future.

The television industry in Indonesia

The first national television network to go on air in Indonesia was Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI). August 24, 1962, marked the day of TVRI’s birth when it broadcasted the live coverage of the opening ceremony of the 4th Asian Games, which was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. Since that day, TVRI held a monopoly for around 27 years before the Indonesian government licensed PT. Bimatara Citra Tbk, currently PT Global Mediacom Tbk, launched RCTI as the second TV channel in Indonesia in 1989. Since then, the television scene in Indonesia has become increasingly vibrant, with the presence of various TV channels providing a variety of entertainment options and news sources in the country. In 2022, the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) recorded a total of 1,371 TV stations with a permanent broadcasting license in Indonesia.

A new era of television broadcasting

In August 2023, Indonesia witnessed a new era of digital television broadcasting as the government successfully implemented the analog switch-off (ASO) program to end analog terrestrial television broadcasting in the country. During the implementation process, national television stations were required to migrate to digital broadcasting mode, while the government phased out analog broadcasting in different regions in Indonesia. As of 2022, KPI recorded 408 digital commercial TV stations with permanent broadcasting licenses, a sharp increase compared to the previous years.

Market players

Since the launch of RCTI in 1989, PT Global Mediacom Tbk has continued to be one of the largest market players in the industry. One of its subsidiaries, PT Media Nusantara Citra Tbk (MNCN), had the largest audience share of primetime free-to-air television (FTA TV) in Indonesia as of August 2023. Global Mediacom is also a key player in the Pay TV segment in the country, with its Pay TV brand MNC Vision. In 2021, the media conglomerate also acquired K-Vision, a Pay TV brand previously owned by Kompas Gramedia, which further strengthened its presence in the Pay TV market. Other key players in the Indonesian TV industry include Surya Citra Media, Trans Media, and Viva Group.

Advertising: a key revenue driver in the TV industry

Advertising has become the largest revenue stream for the TV industry. In 2022, the TV advertising market held the second highest market share after digital advertising, at around 43 percent of the total advertising expenditure in Indonesia. Even though traditional TV faces increasing competition, it remains the main source of news and entertainment for many Indonesians. TV is a powerful tool to reach people who are not active on social media or other online platforms and, therefore, may not be exposed to digital advertising.
