Despite being the smallest in area out of all the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and Finland), Denmark is one of the biggest retail markets amongst its peers. In recent years, retail sales have fluctuated, reaching
in 2022, where 2015 is the baseline of 100. This marks a seven percent increase compared to the basis year.
Some of the stronger contenders within the Danish retail landscape are supermarkets and convenience stores, such as Netto, Bilka, føtex, and Kvickly just to name a few. When surveyed about their interest in shopping for different product categories, over half of Danes specified the
food and drink category, making it the third most popular category after clothing and shoes. A noticeable trend in recent years is that Danish shoppers have become increasingly aware of their shopping behavior, thus making an effort to choose more
sustainable and environmentally friendly products across different retail sectors.
Retail sales
Supermarkets make up a significant part of the retail environment of Denmark. In the third quarter of 2023,
total sales revenue of supermarkets in Denmark reached just over 14 billion Danish kroner. In comparison,
discount stores earned more than 10.5 billion Danish kroner in revenue, while sales of
grocers and late-night stores (kiosks) amounted to just over three billion. The retail sales index for
all consumer goods reached a score of 133 points in 2023, almost reaching the peak achieved in March 2021, and remained above 120 points in general. The baseline year was once again 2015 and set to 100 points.
Key industry players
One of the biggest companies in Denmark in terms of market share, is consumer goods retailer
Salling Group A/S, with a share of almost 36 percent in the grocery store market. The retailer owns several chains of stores, such as discounter Netto, and holds franchise rights for Starbucks. In 2024, Coop Danmark A/S took a
leading position amongst other Danish competitors, with revenues amounting to more than three times that of Circle K Danmark A/S, which came in second place.
