The number of people with a driver’s license in the United States grew from around 167 million in 1990 to approximately 222 million in 2016. Currently, women account for some 51 percent of licensed drivers in the U.S.
When buying a car, drivers in the U.S. tend to prefer Asian manufacturers and the Big Three American carmakers: General Motors, Ford, and FCA. Although FCA was created through a merger between Chrysler and Fiat, the carmaker is often considered to be a U.S. company. In 2018, about 2.5 million Ford cars and almost three million General Motors vehicles were sold to customers in the United States. The most successful foreign OEM was Toyota, with sales of around two million vehicles under its Toyota brand in 2018. Tesla's electric sedans have also gained in popularity. The Californian company delivered almost a quarter million of vehicles between January and December of 2018.
