Video gaming in Turkey - statistics & facts

The Turkish gaming industry has started to strengthen its place in the global market and has become a popular hub for many start-ups in recent years. As of 2022, the number of gaming start-ups operating in Turkey reached over 600, with most of them being founded after 2015.

Leading game developers

In 2023, the publisher of the world-famous battle royale game, PUBG Mobile, Shenzhen Tencent Tianyou Technology Ltd. was the leading global publisher in Turkey based on in-app revenue. That year, Tencent generated an IAP worth over 21 million U.S. dollars in the Turkish market. At the same time, Turkish gaming companies continued to maintain their strong presence in the sector. In 2023, Dream Games brought in an in-app revenue of nearly 841 million U.S. dollars globally, which made it the top-ranking studio in Turkey. The game publisher launched its successful tile-matching game, Royal Match, in 2021. Since then, the puzzle game has become one of the most-grossing in its category, having reached a global revenue of 835 million U.S. dollars in 2023.

Mobile gaming in Turkey

With its young population and continuously increasing mobile internet usage, the country is a prominent spot for the mobile gaming industry. Gamers across the country play various games on different channels and devices (e.g., computer, mobile, and games console) at the same time. Between 2020 and 2022, the number of gamers increased for both mobile and PC platforms. However, lately, mobile gaming has left PC gaming behind by far. In 2022, there was an estimated 42 million mobile gamers in Turkey, about 71 percent higher than PC gamers. In the meantime, the revenue of the mobile games market followed an increasing trend, with some oscillation occasionally. In 2023, revenue of 322 million U.S. dollars was accumulated by the mobile games in the country, and it is expected to rise even more in the following years.

Attributions of Turkish gamers

Many people resorted to games to get away from the stress and troubles in their real lives. Additionally, video games became a tool for creating new realities with endless possibilities, a platform for meeting and interacting with other players, and a path for fulfillment and success. Also in Turkey, many individuals turned to mobile games to have fun, relax, or feel free. To achieve those feelings, about one-third of Turkish people spent one to five hours a week playing video games, as well as a further eight percent devoting more than 20 hours to this activity.
