Pet supplies market in Germany - statistics & facts
The number of sales outlets in German animal and pet supply retail has grown steadily over the last decade, excepting a dip during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. As of 2022, around 1,600 establishments catered to pets and their owners. Two enterprises represent the market leaders in German pet supplies: Fressnapf and Futterhaus. Fressnapf, a German company, is hailed as the leading pet supplies company in Europe, operating in eleven different countries. It also operates online shops and oversees its own brands. Their online revenue grew significantly in recent years, with 329 million euros recorded in 2022. Meanwhile, Futterhaus, also a German company, has stores in Germany and Austria. Numbers increased steadily in the last four years.
Food retailers, which include drugstores and discounters, were responsible for the larger share of pet food revenue generated in Germany in 2022. Specialist retailers include pet supply stores, specialty markets, agricultural trade, special departments in garden centers, and DIY stores. Wet cat food generated the highest revenue in 2022 at around 1.33 billion euros.
