Pet market in Poland - statistics & facts
Pet ownership trends
Dogs slightly outnumber cats in Poland, however, there was also a slight upward trend in terms of owning small mammals or ornamental birds. The total number of owned pets has seen an increase from previous years, indicating a rising trend in pet adoption. As more Poles welcome pets into their homes, the demand for pet-related products continues to rise. This growth in pet ownership is likely contributing to the expanding pet food industry, which is projected to grow annually by 3.93 percent. The popularity and passion for pets can also be seen through the growing content on the internet. Pet channels are attracting increasingly large audiences in Poland. The leading channel in this category, PAPUZIA TELEWIZJA, had 62,500 subscribers as of March 2024.
Impact on consumer behavior
The increasing pet population is influencing consumer spending habits in Poland. The average per capita revenue in the pet food market has been steadily climbing, reaching 43.31 U.S. dollars in 2024 – a significant increase from 2018. This trend is also evident in the e-commerce sector, with Zooart.com.pl and Zoopers.pl emerging as the top-ranked online stores for pet products in 2023.Despite the growing market, Polish pet owners remain cost-conscious when it comes to additional pet care expenses. In 2024, most pet owners opted to leave their pets with family or friends during vacations, avoiding costly pet hotels. Additionally, 60 percent of pet owners spent less than 100 zloty on extra pet care during vacations, with only a small percentage spending over 500 zloty. These habits suggest that while the pet food market is expanding, there's still room for growth in other areas of pet care services and products.
