Soft drinks in Mexico- statistics & facts
A gusto for bubbles
Carbonated soft drinks have historically been the most popular category in the country, and locals have a rather high consumption of this type of beverage. Each month, between 300 and 400 million liters of flavored soft drinks are produced in Mexico. The industry giant Coca-Cola is incontestably the top beverage brand in the country, and sparkling soft drinks account for about 69 percent of the company’s sales in Mexico.Despite this clear preference, the popularity of sports and energy drinks has increased as the health and wellness trends grow. Production of this type of drink averages between 36 and 40 million liters in 2024, two to four million more than in 2021.
Time for a change?
In recent years, concerns regarding health issues associated with high sugar consumption prompted the Mexican government to implement various regulations to tackle the issue. Indeed, the introduction of a sugar tax in 2014 translated into an increase in the price of sugary drinks, which in turn slowed down the sales and consumption of soft drinks in the country.Subject to ever-changing health norms, regulations, and the whims of consumers' preferences, the soft drink market is a dynamic and mutable one whose rules Mexico must continue to follow.
