Online food delivery in the Netherlands - statistics & facts
The glory days of online food delivery are over. Only a few years ago, the internet was the main channel used by consumers in the Netherlands to order food, but the post-pandemic return to normalcy has led to a decrease in the number of online food orders. As a result, the online food delivery market is not growing as quickly as it was before. In 2024, the market revenue of online food delivery in the Netherlands is estimated at just over seven billion euros, with grocery delivery outperforming meal delivery.
Just Eat Takeaway is today the parent company of Thuisbezorgd.nl, which has continued to be a household name in the country. In 2024, around 75 percent of Dutch consumers reported booking through the delivery service. Thuisbezorgd.nl also had a successful year with its mobile app, as over 500,000 users downloaded it.
Just Eat Takeaway: delivery giant with Dutch roots
The Dutch company Thuisbezorgd was founded by Jitse Groen in 2000. Approximately a decade later, the delivery company changed its name to Takeaway. In 2020, the British food ordering company Just Eat merged with Takeaway.com into the delivery giant Just Eat Takeaway, which is now a leading online food delivery platform connecting customers with local restaurants in over 20 countries around the world. The marketplace allows users to search for local restaurants, browse menus, and place orders for delivery or pickup. Globally, the Amsterdam-based company generated revenue of 5.2 billion euros in 2023. Competition tightens
The Dutch market has a wide variety of food delivery services competing with Just Eat Takeaway. In 2022, the home-grown supermarket chain Albert Heijn was by far the largest online food delivery player in terms of revenue. Additionally, in recent years, quick commerce trended heavily in the Netherlands and beyond. Prominent companies such as the German Flink, Gorillas, and the Turkish Getir joined and already left the Dutch market. Similarly, UK-based Zapp ended its operations in the Netherlands in 2021 and Deliveroo, another international player, followed in 2022, citing lackluster growth and failure to penetrate the Dutch market. Following the pandemic, consumers are returning to in-person dining and grocery shopping, making competition tougher for the industry’s newcomers.
