Christmas in Italy - statistics & facts
Holiday gift shopping
As a matter of fact, Italian consumers are not giving up on Christmas celebrations and, especially, gifts. The average spending per capita on Christmas gifts in 2024 was forecast to increase from 186 euros in 2023 to about 207 euros.About 40 percent of consumers in Italy typically start their gift shopping in the month of November, and a larger share stated that they would shop for Christmas presents during Black Friday. In-store shopping was the most popular shopping channel in 2024, closely followed by online shopping with home delivery.
Christmas shopping in Europe
But what about other countries in Europe? If over 50 percent of Italians planned to spend less during Christmas, a similar share of Spanish and British consumers stated the same according to a survey carried out in 2024. The United Kingdom and Germany were the leading European countries in terms of Christmas retail spending that year: German consumers were expected to spend about 73 billion British pounds both in-store and online for their Christmas shopping. However, many consumers in the Northern European countries intended to manage their holiday expenses, mostly by setting a strict budget or by buying fewer/less expensive gifts. If, on the one hand, European consumers still wish to celebrate and enjoy the holidays to the fullest, on the other hand the impact of inflation can not be ignored, leading many of them to cut back on their spending.
