Foreign workers and the Japanese labor market

Statista overview report on labor-related immigration in Japan

Foreign workers and the Japanese labor market

The temporary immigration of foreign workers is seen as one of the possible remedies to the challenges brought about by an aging and shrinking workforce in Japan. After heated discussions, the Japanese parliament passed a major immigration reform that became enacted in April 2019. The reform allowed lower- and semi-skilled workers to enter the country and work in one of 14 different industries suffering from a lack of labor.

This report provides information on the current state of the Japanese labor market, the role of foreign workers, as well as the attitude of citizens and businesses toward labor-related immigration.
