Digitalization in Japan

Statista trend report on digitalization in Japan

Digitalization in Japan

Digital transformation is a topic growing important in Japan. While the country's nominal GDP is one of the largest in the world, it is losing ground against other larger and smaller nations in the Asia Pacific region in terms of digitalization.
Contrary to its image as a technologically advanced nation, the culture of printouts and stamping is still prevalent. Reminded by the corona pandemic of their own shortcomings, digital solutions and procedures are growing in demand among governmental institutions, businesses, and consumers.

The objective of this report is to provide an overview of the current state of digitalization in the private sector in Japan. The Japanese government is aiming for a smart society (Society 5.0) built on innovative technology, but major drivers of digital transformation will be the private sector and consumers.

Taking the domestic e-commerce market as an example, the report explores how businesses and consumers can benefit from and be drivers of the transformation process, outlining emerging opportunities and challenges.
