Both the term and the definition of a “unicorn” were coined in 2013. The term is used to indicate the rarity of companies that reach a market value of over US$ 1 billion. Seven years after the term was established, over 600 companies worldwide have joined this exclusive club. In early 2020, roughly 500 of these unicorns originated from either North America or the APAC region, a number that was significantly higher than those found in other regions of the world. The market valuation of unicorns that stem from the APAC region and North America accounted for almost 90% of the total value of unicorns worldwide as of April 2021. Unicorns headquartered in the Asia-Pacific region had a cumulative market valuation of US$952 billion, which put them ahead of the North American unicorns, which totaled to US$929 billion.
