The e-commerce aftermath: increased cyber threats on online shoppers in the Philippines

The COVID-19 pandemic boosted the adaption of e-commerce in the Philippines. Prolonged lockdowns allowed online shoppers to continue their shopping activities through e-commerce platforms as well as social commerce sites. The pandemic also diversified the payment ecosystem in the country, accelerating the adaption of digital payment methods such as mobile wallets alongside cash-on-delivery payments. However, this dramatic rise in e-commerce posed severe risks such as phishing, financial fraud, and internet malware. This is especially true as Filipino internet users lack the proper knowledge and awareness that could protect them from internet criminals. The use of antivirus software remains limited and at the same time, there remains a critical gap in the IT workforce specializing in these threats. As Filipino shoppers plan to continue purchasing products and services online even after the pandemic, better cybersecurity measures are needed to protect them.
