Hurricanes in the U.S.

This report presents statistics and facts about hurricanes in the United States. It provides an overview of the occurrence of tropical cyclones globally and in the Atlantic basin, in addition to key information on the scale of events to have hit the U.S. over the years, and the economic and social costs they incur.

A tropical cyclone is defined as an intense circular storm originating over warm tropical ocean waters. Hurricanes are tropical cyclones which register wind speeds above 74 miles per hour. In the North Atlantic, the annual hurricane season runs officially from June 1 to November 30.
