Rail transportation CO₂ emissions in the EU-27 1990-2022
Rail transportation in the European Union produced 3.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) in 2022, a decrease of eight percent from the previous year. Since 1990, EU railway CO₂ emissions have fallen by more than 70 percent. Trains are one of the least polluting modes of transportation available, and account for less than one percent of EU transportation GHG emissions.
