Italy: Bike-sharing trips by provincial capital and scheme type 2022

Bike-sharing users in Milan made nearly 5.5 million trips by shared bikes in 2022. Station-based and free-floating bikes each make up around half of these trips. This is despite around 70 percent of the Milanese bike-sharing fleet being made up of free-floating bikes. In Rome, where the entire fleet is free-floating, close to two million trips were made in 2022.

Excludes touristic services and bike-sharing services with a fleet smaller than 80 vehicles.

In station-based bike-sharing schemes, hired bikes have to be returned to the station from which they were picked up or dropped off at another designated hire station.

In free-floating bike-sharing schemes, bicycles do not need to be returned to the same location where they were picked up but can be dropped off anywhere within a usually pre-determined geographic area.
