Leading airports in India FY 2023, based on aircraft movements
Aviation industry demographics
The number of international passenger arrivals in the country has increased gradually over the past few years. Rise in working group and middle-class incomes have accelerated air travel. Domestic as well as international passenger and freight traffic has increased gradually. As of August 2023, the country had 148 operational airports. Rising demand in the sector has also created a need for an increase in the number of airplanes and airports alike.
Boost from tourism
India has always been a major tourist attraction for people from across the globe. In 2022, there were around 6.2 million tourist arrivals in the country. With its vast array of different climates and cultures, the nation attracted close to one million tourists in the month of December that year alone. The winter months attract more tourist arrivals, as the temperatures are moderate across the relatively hotter regions. The e-visa scheme, which is presumably to double the tourist inflow in the country, will likely push the aviation industry as well towards further development in services and infrastructure.
