On the weekend of March 14 and March 15 of 2020, retail sales in the Brazilian city of São Paulo decreased 16.3 percent in comparison to the previous weekend. When compared to the same period of the previous year, the retail sales decrease was even higher, with a contraction of 16.7 percent. This reduction was registered right after the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19, caused by the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), as a pandemic. However, market segments such as hygiene products have experienced a growing demand in the same period.
