Overall, the total number of students enrolled in university education in Flanders increased from 2016 to 2023. In the academic year of 2020/'21, there were just over 129,000 students enrolled in universities in Flanders, whereas in 2022/'23, this figure had increased to almost 135,000 students in total.

A diploma contract is a contract entered into by an institutional board with a student who enrols with the intention of achieving a course degree or diploma, or a student who enrols for a transition or preparation program. In addition, a student can also enrol with a credit or exam contract.
