Greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU-27) decreased across a number of sectors between 1990 and 2021. The biggest reduction was in the public electricity and heat production sector, where emissions fell by roughly 518 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. This reduction is attributable to an increase in renewable energy, and a move away from coal consumption. In comparison, road transport emissions were 131 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent higher in 2021, relative to 1990.
