Main causes of legal abortions in Chile 2022

In 2022, a total of 819 people in Chile decided to legally terminate their pregnancies, of which 363 opted for an abortion because the fetus suffered from an acquired or genetic congenital pathology and it was determined that it would not be able to survive after birth. In other 249 cases, an abortion was carried out because the pregnancy posed a life risk. According to a survey carried out in 2021, nearly two thirds of respondents said they agreed with the current abortion law that allows the procedure when the pregnancy is nonviable, if it imposes a life risk, or if it results from rape.
